Let’s Discuss Your Project

Established Excellence

Stone veneer transforms the front of a home faster than almost any other exterior upgrade. If you’re pricing a project on the North Shore and want to know what it costs or how manufactured stone holds up in this climate, you’re in the right place.

HX Home Solutions is one of the few contractors in the region that manufactures its own stone veneer under the North Star Stone brand at our Libertyville facility. That means custom colors, tighter tolerances, and one team responsible for material and installation from Glenview to Lake Forest.

Why Stone Veneer for a North Shore Home?

Durability

Manufactured stone veneer is engineered to resist cracking, spalling, and color fade. Each piece comes out of the mold to a controlled thickness and density, so there are no hidden voids that let water in during a freeze cycle. When installed correctly, a veneer system can last for decades while avoiding much of the repointing and masonry maintenance associated with full-depth brick or stone construction.

Climate Fit

Chicago-area winters cycle repeatedly through freeze and thaw from November through March. Our North Star Stone veneer is formulated for that pattern: the concrete composite mix has a lower water absorption rate than many natural stones, which limits the ice-expansion damage that causes flakes and cracks in masonry over time. That matters most on north-facing walls and foundations, which often stay damp longer because they receive less direct sunlight.

Low Maintenance

Stone veneer does not need painting, staining, or seasonal sealing the way wood trim or fiber cement does. Occasional rinsing with a garden hose handles most surface dirt. Mortar joints can be spot-tuck-pointed if needed after years of exposure, but that’s typically a minor repair rather than a full rework.

Warranty

Because HX Home Solutions manufactures the North Star Stone product and installs it, warranty coverage is straightforward. There is no gap between a material warranty from one company and a labor warranty from another. When scheduling your consultation, ask about current warranty terms.

Aesthetics

In-house manufacturing means we can produce custom color blends matched to your existing exterior palette. North Star Stone comes in ledgestone, river rock, fieldstone, and stacked-panel profiles. The result reads as natural stone to the eye without the weight penalty or the sourcing delays that quarried material brings.

Value and Return

Stone veneer on the front facade of a North Shore home adds visible curb appeal that buyers notice, and appraisers recognize. For partial applications like a front gable, entry columns, or a foundation skirt, the project scope stays manageable while the visual impact is significant. Full exterior stone veneer is a larger investment but one of the more durable exterior finishes available on the market.

Stone Veneer Styles We Manufacture

All North Star Stone profiles are made at our Libertyville facility. Here are the styles we install most often on North Shore homes and what each suits best.

Ledgestone

Thin horizontal layers with a linear, contemporary feel. Ledgestone is well-suited for modern and transitional homes where the owner wants stone that feels intentional rather than rustic. It’s a popular choice for entry columns and fireplace surrounds.

Fieldstone

Irregular shapes in varying sizes that replicate the look of hand-laid fieldstone. This profile is great for the older colonials and craftsman homes throughout Highland Park and Lake Forest, where the natural, historic character of the street matters to the neighborhood.

River Rock

Smooth, rounded profiles that bring a softer, organic texture to exterior walls. River rock is often used for foundation skirts, garden walls, and accent sections where a homeowner wants contrast against horizontal siding above.

Stacked Panel

Pre-assembled panels with tight, consistent joints for a clean, architectural look. Stacked panel installs faster than individual-piece profiles and suits contemporary builds or commercial-style residential projects.

Stone Veneer Cost on the North Shore

Manufactured stone veneer on the North Shore typically runs $13 to $22 per square foot installed, based on Chicago-area market data from 2025 to 2026. Full exterior projects can reach $18 to $34 per square foot, depending on substrate prep and profile selection. The table below shows where different application types land.

Application Installed Cost (per sq ft) Typical Project Range Source
Manufactured stone veneer: material only $5 to $8 per sq ft Varies by profile and color Chicago-area market data 2025
Manufactured stone veneer: installed total $13 to $22 per sq ft Partial facade: $3,000 to $12,000 Chicago-area market data 2026
Full exterior stone veneer: installed $18 to $34 per sq ft Full house: $15,000 to $35,000 Chicago-area market data 2026
Labor only (typical range) $2 to $4 per sq ft Depends on wall prep and height Chicago-area market data 2026

What Affects Your Price

The range above is wide because several factors shift the number significantly. Coverage area matters most: a full exterior wrap costs far more than a front-gable accent. Wall substrate is the next variable. Installing over existing siding requires a weather-resistant barrier and metal lath; new construction framing skips that step. Profile choice moves material cost: stacked panel typically installs faster than hand-set individual pieces, which can offset the material difference. On densely landscaped North Shore properties, staging and access add time.

HX Home Solutions provides free on-site estimates with no obligation. We also offer financing options for qualified homeowners. See our siding cost guide for a broader look at the pricing of exterior projects.

Manufactured Stone Veneer vs. Natural Stone

For most North Shore exterior projects, manufactured stone veneer is the practical choice. Natural stone justifies its higher cost when a project specifically requires quarried material or when the structure is already designed to support its additional weight. Here’s how the two systems compare on the factors that matter most.

Factor Manufactured Stone Veneer (North Star Stone) Natural Stone Notes
Material Cost $5 to $8 per sq ft $15 to $30 per sq ft SERP-traced market data 2025
Installed Cost $13 to $22 per sq ft Typically higher (heavier, slower) SERP-traced market data 2026
Weight per sq ft Roughly 15 lbs (lightweight) Roughly 50 lbs (heavy) Industry reference; varies by stone type
Framing Modification Rarely required Often required for full wraps Structural consideration
Color Consistency Controlled in-mold; batch-to-batch consistent Varies quarry to quarry North Star Stone in-house manufacturing
Freeze-Thaw Performance Engineered low water absorption Varies by type; some prone to spalling Factual climate reference
Install Complexity Lighter pieces, easier to cut and handle Heavier; requires masonry expertise SERP-traced install data

North Shore Stone Veneer, Manufactured In-House Since 1950

HX Home Solutions has installed exterior systems on the North Shore since 1950. We’re proud to be one of the few contractors in the region that manufactures its own stone veneer. Our North Star Stone line is produced at our Libertyville facility, which means we control the color blends, texture molds, and quality from start to finish. That vertical integration keeps lead times shorter and lets us match stone to existing brick, siding, or trim without ordering from a national catalog and hoping the batch is consistent.

Homeowners across Glenview, Highland Park, and Lake Forest rate us 4.9 stars across 179 Google reviews. Our team is small by design, so you’ll talk to the same people from estimate to final cleanup.

Our Stone Veneer Installation Process

Here’s how a stone veneer project goes from first visit to final walkthrough.

Step 1: On-Site Consultation

We visit your home, review the existing wall substrate, and help you choose the North Star Stone profile and color that fits the architecture. Before committing, you’ll get a written estimate. No sales script, and no pressure.

Step 2: Profile and Color Selection

We bring physical samples to the consultation so you can see how each stone profile looks against your existing siding, brick, and trim in natural light. Because we manufacture in-house, custom color requests are possible for larger projects.

Step 3: Substrate Preparation

We protect landscaping and any surfaces below the work zone before starting. The existing wall surface is inspected and prepped. Where required, we install a weather-resistant barrier and metal lath to give the mortar a proper mechanical bond.

Step 4: Mortar and Stone Application

Scratch coat goes on first to create a bonding surface. Stone pieces are set into mortar in the selected pattern, working from the bottom up. We install corner pieces first to establish the profile at edges and openings. Joints are raked and finished to the specified depth.

Step 5: Final Inspection and Cleanup

We walk through the finished installation with you before calling it complete, cleaning any mortar haze on surrounding surfaces. Landscaping protection comes down, and the work area is left the way we found it.

Step 6: Ongoing Support

Because we manufacture the product and install it, you have one contact for any questions that come up after the job. We document the profile and color for future reference if you add stone to another section of the home later.

Stone Veneer
FAQ

  • A partial facade accent like a front gable or entry columns typically takes two to four days, depending on the substrate prep required. A full exterior wrap on a larger North Shore home can run one to two weeks. During the estimate, we give you a project-specific timeline, not a generic range.

  • Mortar work produces dust and debris in the immediate work zone. We cover landscaping and hardscape surfaces below the wall before starting. Mortar haze on windows, trim, and pavers is cleaned at the end of each day. The yard walkthrough before we leave is part of every job.

  • Yes, in most cases. The existing siding needs to be structurally sound and properly fastened. We install a weather-resistant barrier and metal lath over the siding surface to give the mortar a mechanical bond. We inspect the substrate at the estimate and flag any issues before the job starts.

  • Permit requirements vary by municipality. Some North Shore villages require a permit for exterior cladding changes; others do not. We check the requirements for your specific address and pull the required permit. That cost and lead time are included in the project estimate.

  • Mortar application requires temperatures above about 40 degrees Fahrenheit during installation and the initial cure period. We schedule fall projects with that window in mind and can often complete exterior stone work into October on the North Shore. If timing is tight, let us know, and we will plan accordingly.
